Do not drive on a suspended license

If your license is suspended and you drive, you may face criminal charges. All too often we see individuals with an easy suspension turn into a nightmare because they kept driving and got pulled over. This can lead to a five year license suspension and criminal charges. Do not risk your chance at reinstating your driver’s license by driving, instead follow these steps immediately so an attorney can best help you.

What caused the Suspension

When your license is suspended you need to find out what caused the suspension. In Florida a Drivers license may be suspended for many reasons to include:

  • Failure to pay a ticket
  • Failure to appear in Court
  • Failure to pay child support
  • Failure to follow Court order
  • Lack of insurance
  • Too many points
  • DUI
  • Racing on Highway
  • Drug Convictions
  • Habitual Traffic Offender

You can also check the status of your driver’s license on Florida’s website by following this link. Once you type in your license number, the website will tell you what is suspending your license and in what county. Each reason for suspension is unique and requires a specific action to reinstate your license. Of course, not all suspensions can be removed. Sometimes it involves paying late fees, other times it involves setting up payment plans with child support to get a hardship license.

Also when your license is suspended, you should receive a letter in the mail indicating that your license is suspended. Keep this letter, it is very important.  Next it may be best to get a copy of your Complete Driving Record (abstract or MVR). The complete driving record is important in almost every case because it is possible to get a second suspension when you pay off a ticket that is currently suspending your license. It can get complicated.

Get your Complete Driving Record and information on any tickets holding back your license

If you do not know all the tickets you received since you began driving, it is best to get your driving record. Your driving record can be purchased from the DMV and can usually be obtained by the Clerk of Courts. When obtaining your driving record make sure it is a complete driving and not just a 3 or 7 year record.  Follow the link to learn more about obtaining your driving record.

If you have tickets preventing you from getting your license back, get a copy of each ticket and court records for each ticket.
